LEEEEEEEE PACEEEEEEEEE IS SO CUTE
Sixteen-year-old Elif Bilgin of Turkey has developed a way to replace traditional petroleum-based plastic with banana peels.
The Turkish teen took home a US$50,000 prize for her project “Go Bananas!” Thursday after winning the second annual Scientific American Science in Action Award, associated with Google Science Fair.
“My project makes it possible to use banana peels, a waste material which is thrown away almost every day, in the electrical insulation of cables,” Bilgin said in a media statement.
“This is both an extremely nature-friendly and cheap process, which has the potential to decrease the amount of pollution created due to the use of plastics, which contain petroleum derivatives.”
Bilgin spent two years developing the bio-plastic, which does not decay. She said the process is so easy that it is possible to repeat at home, with special care taken for chemicals used in the production process.
In September, the teen will compete at Google’s California headquarters for the overall Google Science Fair prize for 15-to-16 year olds. She will also have access to a one-year mentorship.
Has anyone else noticed how many brilliant breakthroughs in science are coming from the minds of teenage girls the last few years? Between this story, the four girls in Nigeria who invented a generator that runs on urine, the California girl who invented a twenty-second cell phone charger… Who knows where we’d be today without the patriarchal interference of men, stealing or hiding the brilliance of women?
Our future is in the hands of teenage girls, and I for one feel really good about that.
When I was about 7 I wanted to invent a thing that purified water based off of fish gills. I went to the school library to do research like a good little inventor and one of my teachers asked me what I was doing, and then told me that there were some new barbie books in, and that I’d probably be better off with those.
Don’t forget the girl who invented a torch that’d light up just from the heat of your hands
basically everyone should stop s***ting on teenage girls because they do awesome things when you let them
But nah, girls and women just suck at math and science and have never invented anything worthwhile. Sure. Right.
As most of you probably know, someone somewhere dumped a deluge of purported nude photographs of a number of female celebrities online yesterday. The victims include the likes of Kate Upton, Victoria Justice, Ariana Grande, Kirsten Dunst, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Krysten Ritter, Yvonne Strahovski, and Teresa Palmer. But the focal point for this story has been Hunger Games/American Hustle actress Jennifer Lawrence, since the Oscar winning actress is perhaps the most famous actress on the planet right now. Without going into sordid details ( Justice and Grande have claimed their respective photos are fake, others have confirmed they are real), I’d like to make two very specific points. Ms. Lawrence and the other victims have absolutely nothing to apologize for in terms of the contents of the photos or the nature in which they were leaked. The story itself should not be addressed as if it were a scandal, but rather what it is: A sex crime involving theft of personal property and the exploitation of the female body.
Outlets as mainstream as People and CNN are referring to the photo leak as a “scandal.” All due respect, it’s not a scandal. The actresses and musicians involved did nothing immoral or legally wrong by choosing to take nude pictures of themselves and put them on their personal cell phones. You may argue, without any intended malice, that it may be unwise in this day-and-age to put nude pictures of yourself on a cell phone which can be act and/or stolen. But without discounting that statement, the issue is that these women have the absolute right and privilege to put whatever they want on their cell phones with the expectation that said contents will remain private or exclusive to whomever is permitted to see them just like their male peers. The burden of moral guilt is on the people who stole said property and on those who chose to consume said stolen property for titillation and/or sexual gratification.

If the writers decide that Sam, Dean, and Castiel die at the end of Supernatural, I don’t want it to be a bloody, gory death, or even if it is, I want them to die side by side. I want them to fight this war, whatever it may be in the last season, and I want them to go down, get to the point where they can’t fight anymore, one by one. Then I want one of them, whoever it may be, to end the fight, kill the enemy, and give in after all of those years. And then? I want the screen to go black and Dean’s voice comes in "We were hunters. We saved people, hunted things, for as long as I can remember. The road we traveled was a long one, we hurt, we fell apart… But I guess it was all worth it." And then I want them to wake up in the Impala, Sam and Dean in the same place they’ve been since the beginning of the show, with Dean in the driver’s seat and Sam sitting next to him. I want them to be parked in front of their old house, the one where their mom died, the one they left behind when they became hunters. And I want them to see all the people that they loved so much who’d died. Bobby, Jo, Ellen, Cas, Adam, Ash, Gabriel, their mom and dad, Kevin, Jess, even Meg. And the whole show goes silent and this version of Carry On My Wayward Son starts playing as they get out of the Impala and finally see everyone again. I want them to all go inside and Dean is the last one in. And he just looks around for a second, smiles, and as the words "Don’t you cry no more" play I want him to just close the door. That too much to ask?
you’ve broken my heart
someone make this happen. I don’t care how, just make sure it does.
YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO AN EMOTIONAL PREGNANT WOMAN! NO!
you have officially broken me. I can’t stop crying.
